This annual premier event features local and nationally recognized faculty and focuses on the specific needs of those in primary care, internal medicine, family practice, and general cardiology.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Delineate the etiology of and how to diagnosis and detect thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA).
  • Discuss clinical indications for correction & treatment of TAAs.
  • Discuss treatment options for management of thoracic aortic aneurysms (percutaneous vs surgical).
  • Compare and contrast medical vs catheter based therapies for atrial fibrillation.
  • Define differences between paroxysmal and persistent forms of atrial fibrillation.
  • Discuss differences in pathophysiology between paroxysmal & persistent AFib.
  • Examine the pathophysiological background for renal sympathetic denervation.
  • Summarize the role of renal sympathetic innervation in the past and the present interventional approach for treatment of hypertension.
  • Define the pathogenesis of hypertension and its effects on the kidney.
  • Examine the pathophysiology of aortic stenosis and indications for valve replacement.
  • Contrast transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and traditional (surgical) aortic valve replacement.
  • Discuss the risks, benefits and mortality outcomes of TAVI vs AVR.
  • Identify the types of heart disease in woman of childbearing age.
  • Discuss the maternal mortality associated with pregnancy and cardiovascular disease.
  • Examine the pathophysiology of pregnancy and its effects on the heart.
  • Appraise the different mechanical therapies for end-stage congestive heart failure both currently available and under development.
  • Analyze clinical guidelines as to the use of LVADs as a bridge to cardiac transplantation vs destination therapy.
  • Cite the mortality & success rates with mechanical therapies for end stage congestive heart disease.
